My old power supply died recently and I had to buy a new one in a hurry; mail order was not really an option, so I went to CompUSA. They only had a single 300-watt model in stock: a cheapo, generic supply. So off I went to MicroCenter, which had a much better selection; I spent quite a while examining all the different options. Finally, I chose one of the AOpen "Strong Power" supplies.

The main reason I selected this particular unit was that has a quiet, "smart fan".

What is a smart fan? It's a fan with a built-in temperature probe and electrical circuit to vary the fan-speed based on level of heat in your computer case. When the case is cool, the fan spins slowly and makes very little noise. When the case heats up, like when you're in the middle of a frag fest, the fan speeds up and will cool the case more effectively. (Of course, it also makes a lot more noise then too.)
