AMD first released the mobile Athlon and Duron back in May of 2001. Sadly laptops based on the AMD CPUs have always included budget video solutions that enthusiasts don't clamor for. ATI Rage Mobility and VIA KN133 S3 Twister graphics were fine for most applications, but for 3D they couldn't compete with modern GPUs. Many had hoped Nvidia would introduce mobile nForce solution, but that has yet to materialize. Now with the release of the ATI IGP 320M we may now finally have a good AMD mobile video choice!
We first looked at ATI's new integrated video solution with the desktop version, the IGP 320. Both solutions share the same architecture which is similar to the Radeon 7000 series in performance. ATI has provided us with an engineering sample of the Compaq Presario 900 which includes the IGP 320M integrated graphics. For comparison purposes we will also use the ECS i-Buddie XP using the SiS 740 integrated graphics and the Compaq Presario 700 using the VIA KN133 S3 Twister integrated graphics. Keep in mind that the ECS desknote is a desktop replacement using desktop components and does not include a battery.
