Retail advertisements for video games rose almost 77 percent in the second quarter over a year earlier, while ads for video game hardware rose 55 percent, according to research data released on Friday.
Beyen, a market research provider that tracks retail advertising in 102 daily newspapers throughout the United States, also found that more than 40 percent of game ads in the quarter were for games costing $49.99, the usual price for top titles, compared with about 33 percent in the prior quarter.
At the same time, the number of ads for discount $19.99 titles declined.
Average prices for games for Nintendo (news - web sites) Co. Ltd.'s GameCube peaked in the quarter at just over $26, down from a high of more than $36 in January.
